THE SUBJUNCTIVE GRAMMAR

Function The subjunctive is used in formal English to emphasize requests, orders, and recommendations.

    • With verbs: ask, demand, insist, propose,recommend,suggest, require
  2. Form
    1. Affirmative
      • subject + verb + that + subject + base form
        • Examples
          1. We suggest that you wake earlier tomorrow.
    2. Negative
      • subject + negative verb + that + subject + base form
        • Examples
          1. We didn’t insist that he see a docto
      • subject + verb + that + subject + not + base form
        • Examples
          1. We asked that he not smoke inside

    • With adjectives: recommended,necessary,essential,better/best,important
  2. Form
    1. Affirmative
      • It + be + adjective + that + subject + base form
        • Examples
          1. It is best that children spend time outdoors.
    2. Negative
      • It + be + not + adjective + that + subject + base form
        • Examples
          1. It is not necessary that they attend
      • It + be + adjective + that + subject + not + base form
        • Examples
          1. It is recommended that you not drink coffee late at night.
